Dr. J.W. Lee is continuing his support of education in Brown County schools by not only funding the Lee Excellence in Education Award but by also funding a $5,000 academic achievement grant. During last school year six teacher teams applied for the LEEAP (Lee Academic Project) Grant. Three different readers from outside of the county scored each of the grants and based on points earned, the grant was awarded to RULH Middle School for the 2007-08 school year. Their grant identified three areas of concern: lack of understanding of the geographic regions of the world, lack of knowledge about current events specific to our country and the larger world, and little integration of technology in the curriculum with students who are we well versed in the digital world around them. The fifth grade team led by Kathy Harding and Susan Owens plans to use SMARTBoard technology to address these concerns. This team of teachers will gather data throughout the year and present their findings of improvement with a short presentation at next year’s county.
